Our leg vein specialist Dr. Ken Biegeleisen, known throughout the world as a writer and researcher, is New York's leading specialist in the injection treatment of varicose veins and spider veins. He follows in the footsteps of his illustrious father, Dr. H.I. Biegeleisen (1904-1991), who coined the word "sclerotherapy", and who was the first doctor in the world to inject "spider veins" of the leg (1934).

Dr. Ken Biegeleisen has successfully treated thousands of patients over a nearly 30-year period. He co-founded the Phlebology Society of America, has published extensively, and has organized numerous international symposia on vein disease.

Vericose Veins

The picture to the right shows a typical before-after for severe varicose veins.

The treatment of large varicose veins such as these requires anywhere from 1-10 injections per leg, usually given over the course of 2-4 office visits. Typically, these visits are weekly.

After the injections, most patients are in a special stocking for a period of time ranging from as little as a few days, to as much as 5-6 weeks.

The treatment causes the veins to shrink gradually. Average shrinking times are in the range of 2-4 months. During the first few weeks, the vein may be a bit sore if you press directly on it, but, ordinarily, there is no soreness with walking, exercise, or normal activities generally. Most patients return to work immediately. For most of the shrinking period, the vein will cause you no trouble at all, and toward the end, you will hardly be aware of it.

The skin over the vein may have a lingering discoloration for a while. You can see some of that in the picture above. Note, however, that the vein itself has shrunk dramatically!

These discolorations fade completely, almost without exception, but the time necessary can be quite variable. In some cases there is little or none, and it's all gone in just a few weeks. In more severe cases, the skin may darken considerably, and the discoloration may fade more slowly, over a period of months. "Permanent" discoloration does not occur in the ordinary situation.

Spider Veins

The picture to the right shows a typical before-after for spider veins.

The treatment of spider veins typically requires anywhere from 1-10 office visits.

The "primary" spider veins, shown in the "before" photo, are the easiest to treat. Afterwards, "secondary vessels" may appear. The "secondary vessels" require considerable expertise to inject, and the services of an experienced specialist are absolutely necessary to bring the case to a successful conclusion.

After the injections, most patients are put into a special stocking, usually only for a day or two.

The treated spiders take 3-6 weeks to shrink. Afterwards, there is often a lingering discoloration in the skin where the veins used to be. These discolorations fade gradually over a period of months. "Permanent" discoloration is almost unheard of.

The "cure rate" is at least 90%, meaning that 90% of the time, all the areas afflicted with spider veins can be made to look normal. In 10% of cases, the result is less-than-perfect, but even in those, there is invariably significant improvement.
